Christmas Eve

There is a lovely little Christmas hymn in the Children’s Hymnal for the Lutheran church.

The hymnal was compiled in 1955 and we used it every Sunday morning for the opening of Sunday School. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I discovered “The Snow Lay On the Ground.” Our keyboardist at church said she sang it all the time when she was growing up. I just loved it!

I searched youtube to find a version with all 4 verses and this was the best one. The words are just slightly changed on the first line of verse 2, but I sang the words to my hymnal anyway. Here are the words. I encourage you to click the link and then come back here for the words.

The snow lay on the ground, the stars shown bright,

When Christ our Lord was born on Christmas night.

Venite, adoremus Dominum;

Venite, adoramus Dominum.

(refrain)

Venite, adoramus Dominum,

Venite, adoramus Dominum

‘Twas Mary, virgin mild, of mother Anne,

That brought into this world the God made man.

She laid Him in a stall at Bethlehem;

The ass and oxen shared the room with them.

(refrain)

And Joseph, too, was by to tend the Child,

To guard Him and protect His mother mild.

The angels hovered round and sang this song,

Venite, adoramus Dominum

(refrain)

And thus that manger poor became a throne;

For He whom Mary bore was God the Son.

Oh, come, then, let us join the heavenly host,

To praise the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

(refrain)
