More questions from the Five

A lot of the questions they get apply more to someone in the media. But sometimes they get ones I can answer…

What TV show from your past would you want to be rebooted?

That’s a tough one, since my past is REALLY in the past. I’m thinking of childhood, and that was a LONG time ago. A lot of the programs I enjoyed just would not be PC enough for today.

~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~

Mighty Mouse

Obviously, too violent. Although it wasn’t the violence against the filthy mice that angered me. It was Mighty Mouse pounding the stuffings out of the cat! Yes, the cat was rather mean, but that was because he was fighting the filthy mice! NO ONE wants mice in their house! It’s better to have a cat. But I still watched the show, hoping that at least ONCE the cat would win…

~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~

Dennis the Menace

Another one that can’t take place in today’s world. Letting your child go out alone and ramble around the neighborhood? Nope. And Mr. Wilson would probably take out a restraining order against that juvenile hellion for all the trouble he causes that old man. And stay off his lawn!

~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~

Mr. Ed

Obviously, Wilbur has been smoking some of the “weeds” in his garden. No one hears Mr. Ed talking. Only Wilbur. And anytime something goes wrong, who gets blamed? The horse! (Of course) At some point, Carol probably got fed up with Wilbur’s heavy weed use and divorced him, leaving him to live in the barn with Ed.

My Favorite Martian

They MIGHT be able to reboot this in an entirely different direction. Since Martin never did get his space ship fixed and went home, he could have finally been caught by the authorities and shipped off to Area 51. There, the show takes a serious turn and is no longer a sit-com. “Nephew” Tim gets shot trying to defend Martin from the Feds and is no longer in the story. The scientists have a field day with Martin, running all sorts of tests and learning about his various abilities. Elon Musk gets involved since he’s the only one with enough money to actually be able to fix Martin’s spaceship and take a journey to Mars. All of this is hush-hush, of course. THEN…PLOT TWIST! It turns out that Martin had a little fling with their erstwhile landlady Mrs. Brown…remember her? She got pregnant and had a little hybrid human/martian baby! The scientists go absolutely BONKERS and go after Mrs. Brown and her baby, and just as the feds pull up to her house…THE SERIES IS CANCELED WITH NO RESOLUTION!! Fans storm the studio and burn it down to the ground. The fans build a website with fanfiction to continue the story…

Possible cast:

Tim O’Hara – Benedict Cumberbatch (cameo role)

Martin – Sam Elliott (with special appearance by his mustache)

Mrs. Brown – Janelle MonaĆ© (hums the theme song, but in a minor key)

The scientists – various members of the Liverpool Football Club

The feds – various members of the Toronto Maple Leafs

Lassie

Finally! A show that can be rebooted with no changes necessary! After all, Lassie WAS the first trans female collie on television…

September 2015 Book Report

Wayward Pines trilogy by Blake Crouch

I was highly intrigued by the mini-series Wayward Pines, which ran earlier this year. A man wakes up after a car accident to find he is stranded in a spooky little town called Wayward Pines. No one is as they seem, and there are cameras everywhere, recording what everyone does and says. If someone gets out of line, severe repercussions take place. I just loved it!

I found out it was based on books by Blake Crouch, and got all 3 in the series with the intention of reading them after the TV series ended. (I hated the TV ending, BTW)

I am SO GLAD I saw the TV show first! If I had read the books and then watched the show, I would NOT have enjoyed it as much. I'm still glad I saw the show, as it gave me more of a “feel” for the place, and it was easier to “see” the people in the book, even though some of the characters looked different.

THE BOOKS WERE AWESOME!!!!! If you saw the TV show and enjoyed it, READ THE BOOKS!!! I would LOVE to see a real adaptation of these books. It would take at least 3 movies to do the job right, maybe more.

The books had a more realistic scenario, I thought, and even though it didn't really have a hard and fast conclusion to the series, I was satisfied. I wish Blake Crouch would continue the story. I really would like to know what happened to all these people after the final book's ending.

The books are:
Pines (2012)
Wayward (2013)
The Last Town (2014)

Even if you did read the books first, if you have a chance to watch the TV show, go ahead. You will make comparisons, yes, and the TV version will suffer, but I think you'll still enjoy it.

Mysteries & Music – Arthur Conan Doyle

I was in my early teens when I started reading Sherlock Holmes books and stories. I loved them with a passion, and have them all. I had seen pictures of Basil Rathbone portraying him, so I already had a mental picture to work with. And physically, Rathbone was good. But he smiled far too much when I viewed some of these old movies.

As with some of the other actors I’ve mentioned in previous blogs, Jeremy Brett was BORN to do this role. He IS Sherlock Holmes, and all others will be compared to Brett. Robert Downey Jr. is good, don’t get me wrong, but Brett was the best. Absolutely brilliant. His death was almost a personal loss.

The theme was written by Patrick Gowers. Lovely and poignant.

Mysteries & Music – Colin Dexter

I had never read any of Dexter’s “Inspector Morse” books, but liked the actor John Thaw. As a book, this isn’t really my type of mystery. I tried a couple of the books, but much preferred the series.

Thaw is a wonderful Morse. Very complex character. I enjoyed the back and forth between him and his junior, Lewis. When Dexter killed Morse off, and they dealt with this on the show, I was devastated. When Lewis viewed Morse’s body in the morgue and said, “Good-bye, Inspector” and kissed him on the temple, I cried. Sadly, John Thaw died not too long afterward of cancer.
The theme music is outstanding. Written by Barrington Pheloung. I didn’t know until I looked it up on youtube that the pulse notes at the very beginning are Morse code for the name, Morse. Kinda neat.

Mysteries & Music – Agatha Christie - part two

As far as I’m concerned, David Suchet was BORN to portray Hercule Poirot. I’ve seen a lot of Poirots in my time, and none of them even came close. Suchet nailed it. There is not a whole lot more I can say about him or this series. Marvelous. Wish I had the funds to own them all.

The theme is magnificent. Written by Christopher Gunning. There are various versions of it on youtube. All of them are great, but this is my favorite.
