Trousseau/Hope Chest

This refers to the things a teen age girl would start collecting in anticipation of getting married. The chest itself could be very ornate or functionally plain. The contents varied a great deal, depending on the resources of the girl and her family. It was a custom in many countries dating back as far as the 6th century in Egypt. It was also called a Dower Chest.

A lot of the items such as clothing, table linens, bed linens, quilts and towels would be worked on by the women of the family, including the girl. They would make these items special with embroidery and other needlework. These things could possibly be worked on for several years. The chest would need to be big enough for the contents and portable, since most girls took the chest with them when they married.

General list

Household linens as listed above (multiple sets for each type)

Underwear and nightclothes

Slippers, stockings and gloves

Aprons

“Personal” linens

Jewelry

Clothes for everyday use and some for special occasions

Sometimes china, silverware and glassware

Toiletries and hair care items

After the wedding, the chest would become part of the family furniture. Storage for extra blankets or bedding, also for storing the wedding dress.

A nice little custom from the past.

Know Your Guy

I saw this on Facebook and decided to tell y’all a little about my guy: Marvin

He's sitting in front of the TV. What is on?
Fox News. When the heads start yammering loudly, I put on the headphones at the computer and listen to youtube.

You are out to eat, what kind of dressing on his salad?
None! Just like me! Except he will eat onions on his salad. Yuk.

What's one food he doesn't like?
Chinese. Also, anything with sauce or gravy. Or soup or stew.

You go out to eat and have a drink, what kind of drink does he order?
Rum and Coke. Always.

Where did he go school?
They moved a LOT when he was in school. Schools in Indiana and So. Cal.

What's his nickname for you?
Dottie

If he could collect one thing, what would it be?
What he’s been collecting for years: bayonets and militaria

What would he eat every day?
Macaroni and hotdog casserole

What is his favorite cereal?
Life. Second choice: Raisin Bran

What would he never wear?
A kilt

What is his favorite sports team?
LA Rams! And they’re even back in LA!

What activity does he hate doing?
House cleaning, although he has always graciously done the tub and vacuuming because of my back.

Who is his best friend?
In school, it was David Fischer. Now he says it’s ME! ♥

What is something you do he wishes you wouldn't?
*sigh* Sing. *sigh* I REALLY stink at it, but I love to sing.

You bake him cake for his birthday, what kind is it?
Banana, with banana between the layers

Did he play sports in high school?
Nope. He was in the band.

What could he spend hours doing?
Going through Ebay and the various military forums

What is one unique talent he has?
He can always seem to find the good in any situation. Or at least never lose heart. He can find joy in adversity. He is my lifeline.
